A study of crime statistics for Jupiter, released by the Police Department in May, indicates that, for the first quarter of 2004, Jupiter’s Crime Rate was at the lowest level in the past 18 years. The Crime Rate is a measure of Class 1 crimes (crimes against persons and property; e.g., burglary, rape, homicide) per every 1,000 persons residing in the town."

The Police Department recorded a total of 354 Class 1 crimes in January, February, and March of this year, a 16% decrease from this same time period last year. Chief Richard Westgate said the lower crime rate is a result of the community working in concert with police officers, taking cooperative measures to protect neighborhoods and prevent crimes.
