| Little-Known Facts about Pit Bulls |

Pit Bulls serve as therapy/service dogs. The Chako Rescue Association has Pit Bull therapy dogs in Texas, Utah and California.
Helen Keller even had a Pit Bull as her canine companion and helper. The name of Helen Adams Keller is known around the world as a symbol of courage in the face of overwhelming odds, yet she was much more than a symbol. She was a woman of luminous intelligence, high ambition and great accomplishment. She devoted her life to helping others. Helen chose a Pit Bull as her family companion. Cheyenne and Dakota are a team of hard-working Search-and-Rescue Pit Bulls in Sacramento, California. They play an important role in their community by locating missing people in conjunction with the local Sheriff. In their off-duty hours, they do charity work as therapy dogs.
Cheyenne, Dakota and Tahoe
One of the top rated Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs is Dakota, an American Pit Bull Terrier. Kris Crawford, who has two other pit bulls that are also certified SAR dogs, owns Dakota. Dakota is so good at what she does, that NASA requested Kris and Dakota to assist in the recovery of the Astronauts after the tragic 2003 shuttle disaster.
Kris and Dakota were also involved in the Laci Peterson investigation. Kris and her team have been involved in many cases and have made national news on several occasions. Cheyenne, Dakota and Tahoe are also certified hospital therapy dogs. They can often be seen at pet fairs, shows, schools, etc. It is important to Kris to have the girls out educating the public about the true spirit of the Pit Bull and teaching children canine safety. Animal Planet recently aired a “Pet Story” edition on Kris Crawford, as did National Geographic’s “Dogs with Jobs”. Petey, the faithful dog on the TV show, The Little Rascals, was an American Pit Bull Terrier. He spent countless hours with children day after day and never hurt anyone. He was one of the most intelligent Hollywood dogs of all time.
There are quite a few celebrities who have Pit Bulls as members of their family including: Rosie Perez, The Crocodile Hunter, Judd Nelson, Usher, Alicia Silverstone, Cassandra Creech, Sinbad, John Stuart, Amy Jo Johnson, Linda Blair, Vin Diesel, and Bernadette Peters. Jennifer Lopez used a pit bull in her “I’m Glad” music video. The pet of choice for the lead character on UPN’s TV show, Veronica Mars’, is a pit bull.
Pit Bulls are heroes! America's first war dog was a Pit Bull named Stubby. He earned several medals during World War I and was honored at the White House. The Pit Bull was so respected in the early 1900's that the US Military chose an image of a Pit Bull to represent our country on war posters.
The Ken-L-Ration dog hero of 1993 was a Pit Bull named Weela. One day while outside watching one of the kids in her family, Weela suddenly body-slammed 11-year-old Gary and sent him flying. Gary’s mom, Lori, saw the whole thing and was surprised since Weela had always played so well with the kids. Then she saw a big rattlesnake sink its fangs into Weela’s face and she understood Weela had saved Gary’s life!
A few years later, Weela saved the lives of 30 people, 29 Dogs, 13 horses and 1 cat during a flood in Southern California. Heavy rains caused a damn to break on the Tijuana River. Weela pulled 30 to 50lb loads of food across the river to a tiny island to feed the stranded animals the entire month they were there.
A Pit Bull named Bogart saved a four-year-old child from drowning in a swimming pool in Florida. Dixie, the Pit Bull, was inducted into the Georgia Animal Hall of Fame after she saved some children from a Cottonmouth snake.
Pit Bulls are one of the most stable people-friendly dogs in existence. The National Canine Temperament Testing Association tested 122 breeds, and Pit Bulls placed the 4th highest with a 95% passing rate for best temperament!
