| The Palm Beach Zoo Announces New Baby Jaguars! |
provider writes, "For the first time in the history of the Palm Beach Zoo, we are seeing spots! After 104 days of patiently waiting and around the clock surveillance through a video monitoring system, zoo staff was excited and relieved to witness the birth of two female jaguar cubs on the morning of September 21, 2005. These are the first jaguar cubs ever born at the zoo and only the second litter from proud mother “Nabalam” and father “Muchaco.” The cubs were born in a speciallydesigned denning area of the jaguar exhibit nighthouse within the Tropics of the Americas."

The jaguar is the only member of the genus Panthera (big cats) to be found in the Americas where it is considered the New World equivalent of the leopard. They range from central Mexico south to the central areas of Argentina (Patagonia.) Their natural habitat is tropical or subtropical forests; open grasslands and canyons and they are carnivores. Female jaguars may reach a total overall length of 7 feet; its yellow-brown back is marked with dark rosettes; the belly is white with black spots and the tip of the tail is black. Females can grow to weigh up to 200 pounds with an average lifespan of 18 to 20 years in captivity.
In addition to the opportunity for local zoo visitors to see this endangered species, the cubs are of national conservation importance to the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s (AZA) Jaguar Species Survival Plan (SSP.) Their current wild population is estimated to be around 15,000 animals. The threats to the jaguar include habitat loss, hunting, and the alteration of their habitat by humans for development. The Palm Beach Zoo is a participant in the Jaguar SSP which was approved in 1993.
Now almost three months old, the two sisters are ready for the outside world and will be on display in their habitat for the zoo’s Grand Reopening Celebration, Saturday, December 17, 2005. Media members should watch for a special invitation to a Press Conference & Sneak Peek for the cubs on December 15, 2005. Media kits and photo opportunities will be available at that time. More information coming soon… Watch this weekend for an announcement of a Naming Contest for these two cuties – go to www.palmbeachzoo.org for details.
