Tequesta Country Club, nestled in the heart of the Village of Tequesta, Florida, is a private, member-owned gem with a rich history and timeless charm. Perched on a peninsula surrounded by the north and northwest forks of the picturesque Loxahatchee River, the club offers an idyllic setting for golfers and residents alike.

Founded in 1957 by Charles Martyn, a visionary land developer who played a key role in shaping the Village of Tequesta, the club’s roots run deep in the area’s history. The golf course was crafted by the legendary Dick Wilson, a renowned designer of many celebrated courses across Florida and the United States. Construction began in 1955, and the course officially opened its fairways on December 12, 1957, with a ceremony led by the club's first president, Jack Kurtz.

The grand opening was marked by an unforgettable exhibition match featuring legends Arnold Palmer, Dow Finsterwald, Truman Connell, and Jack Kurtz. Dow, the club’s first head golf professional and an active PGA Tour player, put Tequesta Country Club on the map with his impressive career. He claimed the PGA Championship in 1958, proudly displayed the Wanamaker Trophy at the club, and brought national attention by representing Tequesta on tour with its logo on his golf bag. With nine PGA Tour wins and accolades like the PGA Player of the Year and the Vardon Trophy, Dow cemented the club’s place in golf history. Over the years, icons like Palmer, Nicklaus, and Player frequently graced the course, along with beloved member Perry Como, who shared a passion for golf and the riverfront lifestyle.

Tequesta Country Club continues to honor its legacy through its long-standing commitment to the game and its traditions. Dow Finsterwald’s successor, Ed Ficker, served as head golf professional for an incredible 41 years, earning numerous awards and leaving a lasting mark on the club and the sport. Today, the South Florida PGA’s Sportsmanship Award bears Ed’s name, a testament to his enduring impact.

Recently, the club underwent a transformative restoration led by Tom Fazio II, a distinguished course designer and proud club member. This project revitalized the Dick Wilson design while introducing modern elements, including a state-of-the-art short game practice facility, redesigned greens and holes, and restored natural areas featuring native white sand and Florida vegetation. Fazio’s work seamlessly blends the charm of the original 1950s “old Florida” course with contemporary water conservation and sustainability practices, ensuring the course remains a treasure for generations to come.
