Village now controls 41-acre site as leaders explore long-term improvement plans
The Village of Tequesta has officially taken ownership of the 41-acre Tequesta Park following a transfer from the State of Florida on June 1.
For decades, the village has managed the site in coordination with the state park system, operating and maintaining the property even as ownership remained under the state. The recent transfer now places full control of the park under the village for the first time.
What the ownership change means
The park is located near Jonathan Dickinson State Park and has long functioned as part of the broader state-managed recreation system. With ownership now transferred, village leaders have greater authority to evaluate long-term plans for the property.
Local officials have begun discussing early concepts for potential improvements aimed at expanding recreational opportunities for residents.
Those ideas include possible new athletic fields, updated playground areas, a splash pad, walking paths, and other community-focused amenities. At this stage, the concepts remain in the planning and discussion phase and have not been approved for construction.
Funding remains the key question
Preliminary estimates place a full redevelopment of the park at more than $8–10 million, depending on the final scope and design.
While funding is currently in place for planning and design work, construction funding has not yet been secured.
That gap between early planning and full project financing will play a major role in determining whether and when any large-scale improvements move forward.
What happens next
No construction timeline has been announced, and officials have not indicated when—or if—groundbreaking could take place.
For now, the project remains in the planning stage as the village evaluates priorities, community needs, and available funding options for any future development.
The ownership transfer marks a significant shift in responsibility for Tequesta Park, setting the stage for decisions that will shape the property’s future in the years ahead.
