River Center Lecture Series | Restoring the Indian River Lagoon (March 6, 2026)

The River Center invites the community to its monthly Lecture Series on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, featuring environmental researcher Christopher Moore, Ph.D., University of Florida.

This month’s thought-provoking presentation, “Restoring the Indian River Lagoon: Can We Go Back in Time?”, explores one of Florida’s most complex environmental questions: what does restoration really mean?

The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is one of North America’s most biologically diverse estuaries and has been shaped by both natural forces and human activity for thousands of years. As communities work to improve water quality and protect wildlife, the conversation often turns to “restoration.” But restore to what point in time? Pre-development? Pre-colonial? Thousands of years ago?

Christopher Moore, currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Florida and formerly with Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, will examine the historical, ecological, and scientific dimensions of lagoon restoration — and challenge attendees to think critically about how we define environmental success.
