Jupiter Beach Dance Parties to Continue Near Sea Turtle Nesting Area With New Lighting Rules

Weekend beach dance parties near Jupiter’s sea turtle nesting area are expected to continue, but organizers say they will make adjustments to reduce lighting during the events.

The update comes after the Town of Jupiter hosted a meeting Wednesday afternoon at the Jupiter Police Department to address concerns about the gatherings, which take place near Beach Access 55 during sea turtle nesting season.

According to WPTV, the meeting included representatives from the dance group, the Town of Jupiter, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management, Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ocean Walk Property Owners Association.

The discussion focused on how nighttime beach activity and artificial lighting can impact nesting sea turtles and hatchlings. After the meeting, representatives from the dance group said the parties would continue with lighting adjustments intended to reduce potential impacts.

“We’re going to continue, just a couple of adjustments,” Foreli of Happy Beach Dancing told WPTV after the meeting.

The group said they plan to return to Beach Access 55 this Saturday.

The Town of Jupiter said event organizers agreed to reduce the amount of lighting used if the gatherings continue. However, Loggerhead Marinelife Center said that while reducing lights is a step, it does not fully address the organization’s broader concerns about the impact of the events on nesting sea turtles and their habitat.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center emphasized that it is not a regulatory agency but participated in the meeting to provide conservation expertise and share concerns about the possible effects of nighttime events during nesting season.

Sea turtle nesting season is an important time along Jupiter’s shoreline. Artificial lighting can discourage adult female turtles from nesting and can also disorient hatchlings as they make their way toward the ocean.

Residents and beachgoers are reminded to help protect nesting sea turtles by keeping beaches clean, dark, and flat; avoiding bright lights on the beach at night; staying away from marked nests; and giving turtles plenty of space.

As the beach dance parties continue, local agencies and conservation groups are expected to keep working with organizers to find ways to balance community gatherings with the protection of Jupiter’s sea turtle nesting habitat.
