TEQUESTA, FL — One of the largest drug seizures in local memory had an unexpected star: Scout, the Tequesta Police Department’s dedicated K-9.
At Thursday night’s council meeting, Scout stole the show as Police Chief Medina proudly announced that Scout and Detective Looney were instrumental in a massive narcotics bust — 173 kilograms of cocaine, with a street value exceeding $17 million.
The audience erupted in applause as Scout trotted into the chamber, tail wagging, to receive an official commendation.
“Drugs that will never hit our streets”
Chief Medina praised the combined police effort:
“This operation took dangerous drugs out of the pipeline,” Medina said. “We don’t know how many lives it saved — but it saved lives.”
Detective Loney, Scout’s handler, received recognition as well.
Magnets, Community Engagement, and a Crowd Favorite
The department unveiled new refrigerator magnets featuring Scout’s photo and emergency and non-emergency numbers. They’ll be available at the station and during Saturday’s Coffee with a Cop event.
Council member Brandon couldn’t stop smiling:
“Bring Scout to every meeting,” she joked. “He completely changes the whole energy in the room.”
Continued Community Policing Efforts
The chief also noted:
-
Halloween patrols were a success
-
The department continues active training with the Florida Guard
-
Firearms safety classes are scheduled for this weekend
But the night belonged to the four-legged officer.
As Scout accepted a dog treat from the mayor, Detective Loney quipped, “He’ll eat the bowl too.”
