Jupiter Ridge Sand Spur-Lunacy 50K & 50 Miler
Jupiter Ridge Sand Spur-Lunacy 50K & 50 Miler
The Jupiter Ridge Sand Spur–Lunacy races are designed for ultra runners who want to close out the year with something truly epic—and unforgiving. Set in the Jupiter Ridge Natural Area, this event takes runners deep into one of Florida’s most physically demanding landscapes: soft sand, rolling dunes, exposed terrain, and very little relief.
What sets Lunacy apart is its double-up format, pushing athletes to race twice in one day—once under the Florida sun and again after dark.
Two Ways to Go “Lunacy”
-
Lunacy 50K
Runners start their day with the Sand Spur Half Marathon at 9 a.m. After finishing, they rest, refuel, and return at 6 p.m. to tackle a 30K night run, completing a full 50 kilometers across two very different race conditions. -
Lunacy 50 Miler
For those seeking the ultimate challenge, the day begins even earlier with the Sand Spur 50K at 7 a.m. After logging 31 miles, runners come back at night for the same 30K night run, earning a brutal—but rewarding—50-mile finish.
Not for Beginners
While no qualifying races are required, organizers emphasize that Lunacy is an advanced-level event. The course is widely considered one of the toughest in Florida, thanks to deep sand, constant elevation changes in the dunes, and long stretches that test both physical endurance and mental toughness.
To earn a Lunacy finish, runners must complete both races within strict cutoff times:
-
Half Marathon: 5-hour cutoff (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
-
50K: 9-hour cutoff (7 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
-
30K Night Run: 6-hour cutoff (6 p.m. – midnight)
Miss a cutoff, and the Lunacy title slips away.
Why Runners Love It
Despite—or because of—the difficulty, Lunacy has quickly gained a reputation for being exceptionally well-run. Participants can expect:
-
Lunacy-themed awards and premium swag
-
Full on-course support
-
Crew access, allowing runners to lean on friends and family
-
Dedicated volunteers who understand the demands of ultra racing
For runners who crave a true test of grit, strategy, and endurance, the Jupiter Ridge Sand Spur–Lunacy isn’t just another ultra—it’s a statement race. Finishing it means you didn’t just run Florida sand… you survived it.
